Game Review: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC, Nintendo Wii

Price: £32.75 - £39.99

Age Rating: 18

Genre: First Person Shooter

Design

Essentialy this is not just a revamped MW2 which is what i know i thought it would be, it really breaks the mould when it comes to first person shooting with an array of weapons to use in the online, story and special ops modes alike, which see you wielding anything from a common assault rifle to a mortar launcher taking down multiple hostiles at once.

- Story Mode: You pick up where Modern Warfare 2 left off, after giving General Shepherd a generous helping of knife straight to the eye the world is beginning to fall apart around you thanks to the work of the ultra-nationalist Vladimir Makarov. It comes down to you as you play as different soldiers for each mission to find and kill Makarov and end the destruction he has planned for the western world. At times though it can feel as though you are not really in control of what is going on in the game itself as you find yourself watching the action unfold and you are stood there either completely unarmed or armed with a gun but not actually doing anything useful with it... However this being said when you do actually get in to the action it really pulls out all the stops to make you feel great about playing the game, the guns can at times be a little overpowering and your team won't exactly thank you for accidentally shooting them, this results in a start from your last checkpoint. The hostiles in easy and normal mode are simple enough to take down, especially since they either at times run straight at you or just stay in one place for for too long, however i found that when you crank it up to 'hardened' or 'veteran' difficulty it can become alot trickier with grenades and rocket launchers killing you instantly and rifle bullets only taking three or four shots to kill you its not really a difficulty setting for those with a short fuse.

-Online: This time round Call of Duty have gone all out to make the online experience that little bit different with new game modes such as 'Kill Confirmed' which sees you collecting player dropped dogtags to confirm the kill and gain the points. Another addition is the new ways that killstreaks or as they are now known 'pointstreaks' are obtained, you can choose from one of three strike packages those being assault which contains rewards that either temporarily disarm or attack your opponenents that die with your player, support which is much more based on.. well supporting your team with things such as a drop of ballistic vests or taking down the oppositions kill rewards with a well placed turret, these roll over into the next life, for example if you got killed on the three kills and only needed one more kill for your next reward when you respawn you will still have your three points, only needing one more kill, the final package is specialist which is supposed to be for the more advanced player, however as long as you find a setup that works anyone can use it, this sees you gaining perks that you choose every two kills, however this only goes up to six kills where the other strike packages go up to eighteen. All the packages are worth a try with their own rewards and challenges to be unlocked as you use them, so too do the guns, they level up indiviually gaining experience to unlock new attachments, camos and proficiences such as less recoil when shooting. All in all the online has achieved its goal of making itself a much more team based game mode however there a still players who you find will just own you from every corner of the map but it wouldn't be COD without them.

-Special Ops: This year's Special Ops can be seen as pretty much the same as previous versions with players finding themselves with objectives to aim towards with specific guns and criteria to meet along the way it still works on the three star rating system and can be played co-operatively with friends, at times this is essential but you do have the choice to play these missions online with a random person but this can be alot less enjoyable due to communication issues between countries. Thankfully this time Special Ops has been beefed up with the new Survival Mode, this sees you playing on the online maps against computer controlled opponents who get more difficult to defeat as the rounds pass, each map has its own difficulty rating with varying hostiles, guns and attachments are unlocked by leveling up and with currency obtained by defeating enemies, you can also call in air support and sentries however be careful which enemies you waste/successfully use them on

Gameplay

The game plays well throughout the story mode with the graphics and sound complimenting each other greatly, at times the backgrounds can look a bit grainy and on some slower machines it can lag slightly at higher demanding graphical points, the online mode still has a few issues with spawning where at times you constantly spawn near the person who just killed you or one of their team-mates, however this is set to be fixed in an upcoming game update, for me this update couldn't come soon enough. There are also problems with the floor you are actually standing on, at times I have found myself killed with a swift sniper bullet to my unsuspecting head and then falling 20 feet through the floor to abolute nothingness only to be respawned again after a massive lag, I must stress that is is very rare but in the interest of the review it does happen.

Presentation

The game presents itself as only Call of Duty could, that being massively. Its stunning visuals and well put together sound track take the player to the heart of the battle with a lineup of celebrity voice acting for some of your favourite characters, there are new characters with voice acting which is much to be desired, at times the game can feel a little slow, especially when watching cutscenes and the strange news broadcast style mission overviews but it does its best to try and keep you entertained by throwing in exploding buildings, helicopters crashing towards you and the odd story twist but if you watch and listen closely to the dialogue you can work out certain events a good five minutes before they even happen.

All in all Modern Warfare 3 is a great game which has really reached out to its players in all of its game modes the story plays out well and the final fight and kill is one of the best yet but I can't help but look at its online flaws and think it needs a good push in the right direction, however saying that I still find myself playing it way too much, which to be honest is always the starting point of a good game.
