To start I am going to vent a little bit because I cant help but feel cheated that as a UK resident I have to pay £100 more than the current currency rate for an Xbox One console, the US will see it released at $499 which is £329 at today's conversion rate but instead we are screwed over and have to pay £429, not impressed at all to be quite honest.
Right on to the actual conference itself, to begin the conference they announced the release of a new Metal Gear game to the Xbox One called Phantom Pain, no real detail given on that just a trailer which was only about 30 seconds long.
Next up it was announced that there will be 13 next generation titles released exclusively for the new console. Then there was a massive curve ball thrown as it was revealed that there is a new Xbox 360 console available to buy today, it basically looks like the Xbox One and is really quiet so a massive waste of money from a massive money spinning company.. what the actual hell is going on here? Do they think we are made of money??? GTA V, Batman Arkham Origins and Splinter Cell Blacklist are all big games that are coming to the Xbox 360 this autumn, also World of Tanks, you know that crappy tank game for the PC? Yeah that's available as a free game (no surprise there) and it looks really shitty looks like 360 are getting thrown the shitty end of the stick now that a new console is on the way.
Okay i'm just going to list the games that were revealed because there wasn't any real detail to any of them which really annoyed me, i'm sorry for the negativity of this blog but i am raging about the price :/ anyway here we go with the games:
- Ryse Son of Rome : A roman game where you command troops as a roman general very realistic, if there is one thing i will say about the new console it does have fantastic graphics which looks truly next generation.
- Killer Instinct makes a much anticipated return
- Sunset Overdrive : A kind of cartoony shooter type game which is open world where you choices and actions sculpt what happens around you, looks promising and impressive.
- Forza Motorsport 5 : Much anticipated from a lot of Forza fans now this did look very promising with a new kind of AI called a Drivertar which learns how you play as you play so that it becomes more challenging to beat meaning that you have to change up the way you play.
- MINECRAFT!! : Yes that's right Minecraft is coming to the Xbox One to be honest they would be silly not to include it in their future plans with it's huge success on the Xbox 360
- Quantum Break - Linked with a TV show that is going to go along with the game, it is about a failed science experiment that has caused time to stutter and freeze, a live demo was shown and looked very promising graphically.
- Project Spark : Made by Microsoft Studios it is a Kinect and controller based game which is basically like Little Big Planet on crack cocaine :) it does look very good though with smart glass support which enables you to sculpt the landscape to your liking and add some personal touches, very promising looking game with great potential to go far.
- Dead Rising 3 : Everyone's favourite zombie free roaming game comes to the Xbox One and it does look very impressive, zombies react to your every movement so distracting them is a key skill you will need, weapons can be made with resources that you find within the town.
- The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt : The final game in the series will be on the Xbox One, it features a non linear story a totally open world and over 100 hours of gameplay.
- Battlefield 4 : Yes EA and Dice have announced that Battlefield 4 will indeed be available for the Xbox One, this tame you can take to land, air and sea to take down enemies which does look very impressive however it is very cut scene filled which can at times make you feel like you aren't really in control.
- Halo : Yes yet ANOTHER Halo game has been announced with no actual name or release date yet all we know is that it is called Halo and will be released some time in 2014.
So just to finalise it wasn't a fantastic conference but it was okay, there were some decent games shown and some cool new features such as the built in DVR which enables you to record game play and edit it from your console and even record commentary through Kinect however from what was shown it does lack depth especially with things like the Elgato and Roxio game capture devices on the market however it doesn't look good for these companies in terms of support with the new console. You can now stream your games through Twitch and are no longer limited to 100 friends. Microsoft are also moving away from Microsoft Points and on to real money transactions.
So in conclusion I don't think I will be getting it on it's launch day, maybe see what the price is like at Christmas but for now I think £429 at today's conversion rate of currency is rather bad on Microsoft's part.
